Shamrock Skate

All three girls participated in RMU's local figure skating competition, Shamrock Skate.  De skated Pre-Alpha, Ana skated Beta, and Jenya skated Delta.  Plus Jenya and Ana's Little Blades team gave an exhibition.  They all had a wonderful time.

The Competition that Wasn’t

Jenya's Spiral, originally uploaded by ruthlestina.

There was a scheduled synchro competition this weekend, with all 3 RMU teams supposed to be competing. However, due to a slapstick-worthy series of miscommunications and changing decisions centered around the snowy weather, Jenya and Ana wound up being the only two girls on their team to actually show up.

However, they did get to skate on the practice ice all by themselves for quite a while, which they enjoyed — even De! Here's Jenya showing off her lovely spiral. And later on the girls on the older teams made quite a fuss over them, gave them pins and taught them cheers.

Ice and Chocolate

Went to Hershey, PA this weekend.  Jenya and Ana's Little Blades Synchronized Skating team competed in the Reflections competition.  They placed 3rd, and did a nice job especially considering that several new girls joined the team just a couple of weeks before the show.

The day before the competition we spent some time at Hershey's Chocolate World.  Everyone had a great time.  It's a nice small place, perfect for a couple of hours' entertainment.  Plus lots of chocolate samples, can't beat that.  The girls also liked the singing cows on the "how milk chocolate is made" tour (don't ask).  All in all a very nice weekend.

Girls Skate at Keystone State Games

Just got back from the Keystone State Games, a figure skating competition in which Jenya and Ana both competed.  It was a rather long drive, as it was in York, PA, but everyone had a wonderful time.
Jenya skated Delta, and placed first in stroking and second in freestyle.  Ana skated Alpha, and placed third in stroking and second in freestyle.  De provided an enthusiastic cheering section and made friends with the spectators.
Many more photos of the event are up on flickr.  It was easily the coldest skating rink I've been in, but otherwise a nice rink, with lots of vendors, and a well-run and enjoyable competition.

Lego League Competition

Lego League Competition, originally uploaded by ruthlestina.

Jenya and her FLL team, Brick Busters, competed at the Western Pennsylvania First Lego League Robotics competition. It was the teams' first time participating, so they had made a fairly simple robot and went in not expecting to do very well.

To their surprise and satisfaction, their simple robot proved very effective, and they wound up placing 6th out of 72 competitors. Not bad at all! They all had a wonderful time, and I think it was an excellent learning experience as well.
